Yasujiro Ozu is a Japanese filmmaker whose films are widely regarded as some of the best ever made. This video is a small breakdown of his post-war style, which is the style that he is most well known for. (Note: Ozu isn’t studied enough, he should be studied more).
I would have loved to have done a video about the evolution of his style leading up to his post-war style but the time investment necessary to find, watch, rewatch and analyze approximately 30 films (he directed more films but many have been lost to time) would be astronomical and unfeasible. I leave that task to others. This video is meant to just inform others about the fantastic work of Ozu, and give comfort to Ozu lovers like myself.
Disclaimer: Finding legal ways to view Ozu’s films are hard (read expensive) for a hobby youtuber. I have based my observations on the few films that I have managed to get my hands on (list below). I apologize if any are erroneous.
Films I watched:
Late Spring
Early Summer
Tokyo Story
Floating Weeds (the remake)
Good Morning
An Autumn Afternoon
The Munekata Sisters
Flavour of Green Tea Over Rice
A few silent films whose names elude me (can’t find them anymore).
(Wasn’t able to include footage from all films so I used the films I did find that had the best quality)
Again, Thank You for Watching :)
