Based on the novel by Frank Norris "McTeague". The film tells the story of McTeague, a dentist who marries his assistant, but then falls from grace due to his greed and obsession with money.

The film was praised for its innovative direction and realistic portrayal of the lives of the poor in America. However, due to excessive length, the production decided to cut part of the original material. This led to a conflict between Von Stroheim and the producers, and the final version of the film was reduced to about a quarter of the original length.
